Creating a Form Overlay

Return to Tips N Tricks Archive Index

If you have a standard layout that involves placing logos, text, etc. in certain locations, Elixir provides a way to build an overlay form to designate location of information.

The  section on the overlay above is set up to allow for position of a letterhead, logo, three columns of text, and page identifier at the bottom of the page.  It is possible to make note on the overlay concerning width of columns, and definition of areas for letterhead etc.  In addition, if the overlay form contains a set of fonts that are the standard for your forms design, calling the form as an overlay loads the fonts into the FormBuilder.

To bring a form in as an overlay, perform the following steps.

1.    Open new form

2.    At top, pull down menu from File.  Select "load form overlay"

3.    Select form to use as an overlay.

4.    Design the form, using the overlay for guidance.

(Keep in mind that the overlay does not get written with the form when you save it.)

This method allows ANY form to be used as an overlay.   However a complex form with lots of text is likely NOT a good candidate, as it makes the form design more difficult to see what you are doing.
