Creating Windows and HP Printer Fonts in
Elixir
- Start Elixir
- Convert your AFP fonts to Elixir format
- Open the Fonts then Elixir Fonts Folder
- Select the fonts you want to convert, then drag and drop them on the
Converter Icon
- When the dialog box appears, select Windows and HP PCL
- Press OK
- When the HP Fonts Converter Options box appears, do not make a rotated
version, press OK
- After the conversions are completed, your files will reside in the
following directories:
Wndows Fonts = drive:\ELIXIR\FONTS\SCREEN\WINDOWS with a .FON extension
HP PCL Fonts = drive:\ELIXIR\FONTS\PRINTER with a .FLJ extension
- Open File Manager (from the Main group)
- Go to the drive:\ELIXIR\FONTS\PRINTER directory
- Notice that your AFP "X0" fonts have been converted to X1, X2,
X3 and X4 fonts
- You must select the X1name.FLJ fonts and copy them to the drive:\ELIXIR\FONTS\SCREEN\WINDOWS
directory
- Now move to the drive:\ELIXIR\FONTS\SCREEN\WINDOWS directory and
rename the X1name.FLJ fonts to X0name.FLJ
(Note: This step is required to keep the screen and printer font names in sync for your
Windows applications.)
- Repreat this step for all the .FLJ fonts you want to use in Windows
Adding AFP Fonts to the Windows Environment
After creating the .FON and .FLJ fonts above, they have to be added to
the Windows Environment so they can be accessed by Windows Applications. . .
- Open the Main Group then Control Panel
- Select the Printers Icon
- Select HP Laserjet IID then Setup
- When the Setup dialog box appears, select the Fonts. . . button
- Select the Add Fonts. . . button
- When the Add Fonts dialog box appears, enter the path where the .FLJ
fonts reside (remember you moved the fonts you need to drive:\ELIXIR\FONTS\SCREEN\WINDOWS)
then press OK
- Select all the fonts you want to install from the right window
(Note: The fonts will be named Brush Script, Courier or Line Printer. As you click on each
font, the actual AFP font name will appear in the lower left corner in parentheses.)
- After selecting all the fonts you want to add, click the Add... button
- When the dialog box appears asking you where to place the fonts, enter drive:\ELIXIR\FONTS\PDFONTS
- If this directory doesn’t exist, you will be prompted to create it -
select OK

Renaming the Fonts Back to their AFP Name
- Once you have installed these fonts and they appear in the left window,
you must rename them back to their AFP name.
- Select the first font then click on the Edit... button
- Change the highlighted name to theoriginal AFP name (Note: It is listed
just above the Name: dialog box.)

- Now select the "Don’t care" option located in the bottom
right portion of the window
- Press OK
- Repeat this process for all the fonts
- When finished, press the Exit button
- Then press OK, and finally Close
Adding the Windows Screen fonts
- While in Control Panel, double click on the Fonts Icon
- Click on the TrueType... button, make sure the Show Only TrueType Fonts
in Applications option is not selected

- Select OK
- Now select the Add... button
- Change the Drives: option to reference the drive where Elixir is
installed
- Now change the Directories: option and select the
ELIXIR\FONTS\SCREEN\WINDOWS directory
- All of the available Windows fonts will be listed
- Select the "Copy Fonts to Windows Directory" option
- Select the fonts you want to add, from the list and press OK
- All the fonts you selected will be added to the Windows environment
- Select one of those fonts, and you will see a sample of the typeface in
the Samples window
- Press the Close button

Wrap Up
You are now ready to start using your AFP Fonts in Windows Apps. . . If
you have an HP compatible printer attached to your P/C, you will also be able to proof
print those applications with the AFP fonts used in your application!
Keep in mind that this process will also work with signatures and logos
that are in font format. Simply follow the steps outlined above, and you will be able to
utilize those signatures and logos in your favorite Windows application. . . |
