Importing Xerox  Fonts with the Elixir PrintDriver

  • Open the Main Group, then Control Panel
  • Select the Printers Icon
  • Select Elixir PrintDriver on Disk in the Installed Printers: window

  • Click on the Setup Button - the following dialog box appears

  • Click on the Font Import Services button - the Font Installer dialog box will appear
  • Notice in the sample screen grab below that we have already installed one font. . .

  • Click on the Font Install Options button
  • Notice in the screen grab below the Windows Screen fonts Directory and Working directory settings. Also, notice that we have selected the Windows Screen fonts option under Make:

  • Click on OK
  • Now select the Import fonts. . . button

  • When the Import Fonts dialog appears, select Import XEROX fonts, specify the Fontname: (we used *.fnt) for the font names you want to import (this is a filter option you can use, like P*.fnt for all fonts beginning with P).
  • Notice the Imported Fonts Directory setting. This is where the Elixir PrintDriver will place HP LaserJet versions of the Xerox fonts that will be created during the Import process.

  • Now click on the Options button to the right of the Import XEROX fonts option
  • When the Import XEROX fonts - options dialog box appears, select 9700 and Keep Elixir Font

  • Press OK
  • Press OK again
  • You will see a Converting . . . . message in the lower left corner of the dialog box
  • After the conversions, you will see a message in the lower left corner of the dialog box indicating how many fonts are ready for installation.

  • Simply select the fonts you wish to install by clicking on them in the right window under Imported fonts:
  • After selecting the fonts you want, press the Add. . . button

  • The selected fonts will automatically be added to the Installed Windows fonts: list (below)

  • When all of the selected fonts are loaded, press the Exit button, then OK

At this point, you can now use the imported Xerox fonts in your favorite Windows application. Make sure you specify the Elixir PrintDriver on Disk as the default printer for the application you are using (ie: Word for Windows, WordPerfect, etc. . .). If you don’t, the imported fonts will not show up in the font list within the application.

If you would like to use the imported fonts AND proof print them, you have to perform the following steps:

Note: The Windows Screen Versions of the Imported fonts are placed in the drive:\ELIXIR\FONTS\SCREEN\WINDOWS directory and the HP LaserJet Printer Versions of the Imported fonts are placed in the drive:\ELIXIR\FONTS\PDFONTS directory

Adding Xerox Fonts to your HP LaserJet IID Printer

  • Open the Main Group then Control Panel
  • Select the Printers Icon
  • Select HP Laserjet IID then Setup
  • When the Setup dialog box appears, select the Fonts. . . button
  • Select the Add Fonts. . . button
  • When the Add Fonts dialog box appears, enter drive:\ELIXIR\FONTS\PDFONTS then press OK

  • Select all the fonts you want to install from the right window
    (Note: The fonts will be named Brush Script, Courier or Line Printer. As you click on each font, the actual Xerox font name will appear in the lower left corner in parentheses.)
  • After selecting all the fonts you want to add, click the Add... button
  • When the dialog box appears asking you where to place the fonts, enter drive:\ELIXIR\FONTS\PDFONTS

Renaming the Fonts Back to their 6 Character Xerox Name

  • Once you have installed these fonts and they appear in the left window, you must rename them back to their original 6 character Xerox name.
  • Select the first font then click on the Edit... button
  • Change the highlighted name to the 6 character Xerox name (Note: It is listed just above the Name: dialog box.)

  • Now select the "Don’t care" option located in the bottom right portion of the window
  • Press OK
  • Repeat this process for all the fonts
  • When finished, press the Exit button
  • Then press OK, and finally Close

Making sure you can see the Windows Screen fonts

  • While in Control Panel, double click on the Fonts Icon
  • Click on the TrueType... button, make sure the Show Only TrueType Fonts in Applications option is not selected

  • Select OK
  • Press the Close (or cancel) button

Wrap Up

You are now ready to start using your Xerox Fonts in Windows Apps. . . If you have an HP compatible printer attached to your P/C, you will also be able to proof print those applications with the Xerox fonts used in your application!

Keep in mind that this process will also work with signatures and logos that are in the .FNT format. Simply follow the steps outlined above, and you will be able to utilize those signatures and logos in your favorite Windows application. . .
